King Chulalongkorn (b. 1853-d. 1910), also known as King Rama 5 ( reigned: 1868-1910), is one of the great kings of Thailand, and fondly remembered by his people. He is known for resisting the nefarious imperial ambitions of both Britain and France, modernising his country, and reforming the governmental administration. Statues of him are to be seen throughout Thailand, and invariably at the front of provincial administration buildings (Provincial Halls).

Pattani province and city lie ~1,000kms south of Bangkok on the eastern side of the Malay Peninsular. A small province and city, which does have a statue of King Chula in a prominent location. This location is not directly in front of the provincial hall, but rather 100m or so to the east, in an open area. The statue stands on a plinth, which in turn is on a dais. Easily found near the city centre, not too far from the majority of the other public institutions in the town.

This statue follows the usual style, however, I venture to suggest that the King is depicted in a slightly different manner here. He does wear military garb, including a sword, but he appears to be wearing what I would call 'Malay' trousers. This is most likely in deference to the Muslim majority of the province.

ADVISORY: For the last few years and decades there has been an ongoing insurgency in the provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat (the 'deep south' of Thailand). An average of 600 people have been killed per year between 2004-9. The Australian government strongly urges its citizens not to visit these provinces: "do not travel". Having said all of this there is no blood on the streets, and life goes on normally for the vast majority of people. You have been advised.
