The Mormon Church wanted to establish new communities in southeastern Utah to cement peaceful relations with the Native Americans of the area and to reinforce their religious hold over the area that is now Utah. An expedition set out to establish a new route into the area in an attempt to shorten existing routes by hundreds of miles. Their most significant achievement, among many daunting challenges, was the establishment of a road through what is now known as "Hole-in-the-Rock.
