Muriwai Beach in West Coast Auckland is an exposed beach break that has very consistent surf and works all around the year. Offshore winds are from the east. Windswells and groundswells in equal measure and the ideal swell direction is from the southwest. Waves at the beach break both left and right. Best around high tide when the tide is rising. When the surf is up, it can get quite busy in the water. Take care of rips and sharks.
Muriwai Beach is an unbroken stretch of beach which extends up the Tasman Sea coast to the mouth of the Kaipara Harbour.
You are able to drive a 4WD vehicle along the beach at low tide, and road rules apply. Access is permitted via Coast Road and via Rimmer Road further north.
* Speed limits: 30km from Coast Road to just after Okarito Stream and 60km thereafter
* There is no access to NZDF Bombing Range or DOC’s Papakanui Spit at the northern end of the beach.
* Access (entry and exit) is via Coast Road and Rimmer Road.
* Stay off the dunes and stay on the hard sand.
* All Road rules apply – you need a WOF, Rego and license to drive on this beach and drivers need to wear seatbelts and bikers helmets at all times.
* Put your headlights on and keep left.
* Drive to the conditions and be aware of the tides. Objects can be submerged. Horse riders and pedestrians can be hard to spot.
* Watch the tides. You can be cut off at high tide on this beach.
There have been many accidents on this beach and it is patrolled by the police. Please take care. If you do not wish to drive, you can walk along the beach from the southern end at the Muriwai beach settlement, go as far as you like, there are spectacular views of the waves along the whole beach. The beach is backed by deserted sand dunes, there are no buildings or signs of life further north than the Muriwai village where there is the Muriwai Volunteer Lifeguard Service, a motorcamp and shops.
