In 1850 Madison County’s first grist mill stood on this spot. Formerly known at Buffalo Center, the community and mill are now nothing more than a memory and a sign noting its significance. The words painted on the sign say: Buffalo Center, Site of the County’s First Grist Mill, 1850. It is located on Co. Rd. P71 south of Winterset.
