The historic Shenandoah County Courthouse is located in the town of Woodstock, Virginia. Woodstock has been the county seat since Shenandoah County was formed in 1772. The limestone courthouse was designed by Thomas Jefferson, and was visited by soldiers from both sides during the Civil War, including Generals Banks, Fremont, Hunter, Sheridan, Ashby, Rosser, Jones, Hampton, Gordon, Shield, Early and Ewell. Currently the Shenandoah County Courthouse is the oldest courthouse still in use west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
