Up until the early 1980s Temecula was a sleepy little town nestled against the mountains west of what is now Interstate Highway 15. With the completion of Interstate 15 in 1980, large subdivisions popped up in rapid succession east of the freeway. This area became known as Rancho California and attracted people from the more expensive areas of coastal Southern California because of much lower housing costs. When this area incorporated in 1989, they named the new city Temecula.
