King Chulalongkorn (b. 1853-d. 1910), also known as King Rama 5 ( reigned: 1868-1910), is one of the great kings of Thailand, and fondly remembered by his people. He is known for resisting the nefarious imperial ambitions of both Britain and France, modernising his country, and reforming the governmental administration. Statues of him are to be seen throughout Thailand, and invariably at the front of provincial administration buildings (Provincial Halls).
This statue of King Chulalongkorn is a marked departure from most. He stands here, not in front of a provincial hall, but rather on the beach. The beach is on the promitory of Lampan ~15kms east from the provincial capital city of Phatthalung. Something of a tourist spot in the province.
The king is depicted in rather casual (for a King) civilian garb, and rather than holding a sword (his normal act) he holds a walking stick. He also (to me) seems just a little older than he is depicted in his more official style.
