12 time Major League Baseball All Star Mel Ott was born in the west bank city of Gretna, LA (across the Mississippi from New Orleans). He died in 1958 as a result of an automobile accident. He is buried in this mausoleum directly to the right of the main entrance into the cemetery. The Metairie Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic places.
Description: Power hitting Ott holds or held these records: 6-time NL home run leader, youngest player to reach 100 home runs and first National League player to reach 500 homers. Led national League in walks 6 times. Only of 5 players to be intenionally walked with bases loaded. First NL player to post eight consecutive 100-RBI seasons. Twice scored six runs in a game . His #4 is retired by the Giants organization.
