Replicas of the original state houses of the six New England states are found along the Avenue of the States at the Eastern States Exposition. The Massachusetts building has its counterpart, the Old State House, which is a major community resource, tourist attraction, and the oldest surviving building in Boston. Both buildings have wonderful wood sculptures of a lion and a unicorn, the British royal symbols, at their roof-lines. For artistic reasons the replica at the Eastern States Exposition places these sculptures in the front of the building; whereas, the original building in Boston has them in the back so they were seen as you sailed into Boston Harbor during colonial times. Otherwise, the buildings are strikingly similar.
The lion is a common symbol in heraldry. It traditionally symbolises bravery, valour, strength, and royalty, since it is regarded as the king of beasts.
