The sundial in the Dominican monastery near Corbara, (Cuventu San Dumenicu, Corbaru) is the most advance dial I saw in Corsica. The engraved marble dial on the south wall of the cloister is dated 1861 (MDCCCLXI) and features declination lines marked with zodiac symbols. The gnomon has a pierced star shaped nodus at the tip to better show the time and date. The dial is an afternoon dial, declining a bit to the west. Three morning hours are marked in Roman numerals from IX to XII. Five afternoon hours, each half hour, with hours are marked, I to V. An analemma meridian is marked with dates. Religious crests are also engraved on the dial. The motto in Latin is UNA HORA VENIT JUDICIUM TUUM or “One Hour Comes when You are Judged”
The sign in Corsican indicated the monastery is occupied by the “Brothers of St John (Frères de Saint Jean)”, is open for visits at 3 PM during the off season, 1st Oct to 31st May. “Ring the bell strongly if the brother is slow coming”. We visited unannounced one morning during Holy Week, entering undisturbed through the open kitchen door around at the back, leading to enter the cloister. The kitchen staff ignored us as the service and singing continued in the church. One hour comes when I will be judged!
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
