The Piedmont Kilns were used from 1869 through the early 1900s to make charcoal. Charcoal was the favored fuel source because it burns hotter, cleaner, and more slowly than wood.

With vast timber in the nearby mountains, Moses Byrne built the kilns to supply charcoal for the iron smelting industry in Utah. The kilns, conical-shaped are 30 feet across and 30 feet high. They are some of the best remaining, intact set of charcoal kilns in the region.

The charcoal kilns can be seen by traveling 7 miles south of Interstate 80 on a well maintained gravel road east of Evanston Wyoming.
