Duke John (1537-1592) founded the city of Pori in 1558 and the statue of young duke was dedicated in the 8th of March 2008 as a part of Pori City 450th anniversary. Swedish Duke John ruled Finland between 1556-1563 and became the King John III in 1568 (coronation in 1569).
Statue is located next to Pori old city hall, Porin Raatihuone and across the street is another waymark statue: Satakunnan karhu. Next to these two statues is Raatihuone park and new city hall.
The statue depicts the young duke standing with the hands on his hips. His left hand grabs the sword. The clothes of duke are similar than in the some known paintings of John III.
This bronze statue is sculptured by Sofia Saari (born 1976), who has also designed a bust of John III for the city of Turku. Funding for the statue was collected by the Rotary Club of Pori.
The inscription in the pedestal says in Finnish and Swedish:
"John (1537-1592)/the Duke of Finland (1556-1563)/the King of Sweden (John III) 1568-1592/the founder of Pori city 8.3.1558", then in Latin "Deus protector noster" (God our protector), which is the slogan of Pori.
