Stafford County was born in 1664. As settlements grew around Aquia Creek and Potomac Creek in Virginia, a new county was established. It was named after Staffordshire in the home country of England. Stafford's plantations, iron works, and mills were major suppliers to England in pre-Revolutionary times. Stafford County was the boyhood home of George Washington and a major encampment for the Union during the Civil War.
On August 1-8, 1964, Stafford celebrated its tricentennial anniversary during which time the capsule was buried to be opened on Stafford's quadricentennial birthday.
