Krabi town is the capital of the Krabi province, ~700kms south of Bangkok. The small city contains a plethora of animal sculptures, each of which represent some aspect of the local culture or aspiration—usually in a fairly abstract manner.
At a major traffic intersection near the town centre is a set of traffic lights located at the centre of the intersection. Atop this towering traffic light is a ferocious saber tooth tiger, sculpture. Immediately, beneath, on the four lights facing along each street, are four other saber tooth tigers. All of the tigers look mean. There is also another tiger on the north west corner, with a plaque, which explains the history of saber tooth tigers, and explains why the tigers are here.
The sculptures are of recent origin, having been created in 2010, at the instigation of the mayor and city council, suggested by the discovery of saber tooth tiger fossils in the province.
