In Boston, at the Boston Harbor Towers Plaza by India Wharf, is an installation of four angled pieces arranged in an exact pattern. This installation is along Boston's Harborwalk, and nearby is a view of the harbor.
The pieces are rather simple: Each is shaped like an open laptop computer, with flat polished stainless steel on all sides, about 15'x15'x17' in size. They are open to the sky, so, if you are thinking about sitting on them on a clear hot summer day, I would advise that you watch that you don't come in contact with any exposed skin!
There is a column with plates that explain the piece. The artist is David von Schlegell. He was born in St. Louis in 1920 and was trained as a Naval Architect and Engineer. He taought in several places. He started working with metal sculpture in 1964, seeking to 'pair down emotionalism' as he rebelled against the 'abstract expressionism' seen during that time.
I believe that he accomplished taking the emotion out of art. In fact, it leaves little emotion to me whatsoever. It did give me an opportunity to interact with it, however. One of the pictures in the series is me curled up like a hot dog in a solar cooker. I'd be interested in seeing how other visitors interact with it!
