The Alaska Railroad runs from Seward and Whittter, on the south coast of Alaska, inland to Fairbanks, the northernmost point on the line.

In May 2005, the Alaska Railroad opened a new depot northwest of downtown, and that terminal is in operation today. The old Fairbanks depot was in downtown Fairbanks, just north of the Chena River. Near what is now the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner building, this sign is still present at the end of a terminated railroad line.
