Eight hundred of so kilometres south of Bangkok, along the long peninsula of southern Thailand, past the beach resort province of Phuket, is the quiet, friendly, and pleasant town and province of Krabi. The town itself is small, a few tens of thousands of people. It is linked to the wider world via an airport, and a bus station. The station is located ~5kms to the north of the town, and is not overly large.

It differs markedly from the 'standard' design of Thai provincial stations. The Krabi station is a squarish building surrounded by a bus parking area, as opposed to an open building with bus bays. The interior of the station is filled with ticket counters, and food, drink and tourist trinket stands. In the parking area are also a range of motor bike taxi drivers, and taxis, waiting to whisk you into and around the town.

While the town itself has few tourist attractions, the province has several national parks, several beaches, and several islands, all of which attract a variety of tourist, both Thai and foreign. As such outside the bus station are at least a dozen tour agencies offering bookings, transport and accommodation, and of course that most needed of commodities, advice.

There is a new bus station being built a little to the north of the current station. I would estimate that within a year this new and more 'modern' facility will take over the functions of the current building. However, I strongly suspect that the 'old' station will still see service, most likely for local bus (intra-province) transport.

I found the taxi drivers here to be very pushy about their services. To get into the town they want 200 baht ($6). This can be bargained down to a more equitable 100 baht. There is also a bus service from the station into the town. You will also most likely be approached with offers of 'cheap' accommodation. The reality is that Krabi town is replete with a range of four to one star accomm, and if you book at the station you will pay a premium. Grab a bus into town and take a look around.
