The origin of the name Pumpkin Center has been lost in the mist of time; however, it was a popular waystop during the westward expansion of transportation. Sitting along what was to become US Hwy 16, was first called Custer Battlefield Highway as it was promoted as the link from east to Yellowstone National Park. Located at what was originally called Wellington Corner, it was finally closed in 1993. It served its purpose and has gone on to join the earlier wagon camps and stage coach stations in the evolving history of Minnehaha County.
