Organized on April 17, 1836, by twenty early settlers from Mays Lick, Kentucky, as one of the first churches of the denomination west of the Mississippi River. This church, of Romanesque and Greek Revival style, was erected in 1870. The pipe organ was installed about 1900. The oaken arches over the organ, choir loft and baptistry were added in 1925. The original building, which was begun in 1839, is at 12th and Main Streets. Alexander Campbell, who founded the denomination in 1832, preached there on several occasions.
