In Newport, on the west end of Washington Square, is the Museum of Newport History, located within the Old Brick Market. This is a great place to start if you are looking to learn about the 'whole' history of Newport, which is long and varied.

Newport has been around since the mid 1600s. Since that time, it has served as a major trading port, as well as the Provincial and State Capital until the state government was moved to Providence. From early beginnings Newport, and Rhode Island in general, had been religiously tolerant, and, thus, had a healthy mix of religions, including Quakers. Newport had also been part of the Underground Railroad and then became the resort area for the super-rich.

This museum has exhibits on the second floor that try to tell the story of Newport from its founding in Colonial times to the present. There are many exhibits, including James Franklin's printing press - James is the brother of Benjamin Franklin. The first floor is where the gift shop is located.

There is a parking garage located by the transit bus depot approximately a quarter mile to the west.
