The Lafayette County Courthouse was built in 1847 and is the oldest continuously operating courthouse in Missouri. The cupola on which the clock is currently mounted was not in the original plans for the courthouse but was added to plans during the construction of the courthouse. The cupola was added immediately after the completion of the courthouse. The clock was added in 1886 by the citizens of Lexington.
