The picture on this sign shows an early street scene, probably prior to the great fire of 1894 which destroyed much of the business district.

The town is not only surrounded by fertile land, but the nearby streams and lake provided power for industry. For many years Norway was known as the "Snowshoe Captial" of the United States having produced more than 80% of the country's snowshoes. Many of the old factories are now silent, having moved or closed as manufacturing has been moved to foreign countries. But, it is still an area that draws vacationers for its beauty and proximity to outdoor recreation.
