The street-facing side of this box shows a boy opening a jar, like the Pandora of Greek mythology, from which many ghosts escape and fly about. The adjacent eastern side, by contrast, shows a giraffe and a toucan in a sunny landscape, with an unexplained Greek letter "pi" (perhaps for "Pandora"?) in the upper left corner.

The artistic styles seem so different that I wonder whether they were painted by different people, or by one stylistically flexible artist.

The ghost-jar side seems to be signed "Theresa [something]", but if the paint after the first name is supposed to be a surname it is illegible. There is no signature on the giraffe side.

The painting of utility boxes in this neighborhood is sponsored by the Mira Mesa Town Council (a volunteer/business organization) and has been spearheaded by the Mira Mesa High School art department. See (visit link) for more information.

There are photos of about 30 of the other Mira Mesa utility boxes, some with info about the artists, at (visit link) .
