Hastie Gas Station was built by Ross Hastie in 1933 and served motorists along Hwy 65/69 for the next decade. It was originally a Standard station; the pumps were removed and replaced with Red Crown pumps. The tiny brick “convenience store” is located between Des Moines and Indianola and is one of the few stations of this style that has not been reborn for a different use. It still contains much of its original equipment, but the auto mechanics’ “grease pit” has been removed. The station is a reminder of days when one could purchase 5 gallons of gas for under a dollar, and service included checking the oil and washing the windows.
