Calacuccia is a quiet town in the Niolo Valley, Haut Corse, amid the highest mountains in Corsica, Monte Cinto, Paglia Orba, Cinq Freres, Capu de Tozzu, etc. It is accessible around the corner from Corte or from Porto over Col de Verghio, the highest road mountain pass in Corsica at 1477 m or 4850 ft.
The sundial is large, about 12 ft wide, between windows on the south facing wall of the old monastery. The gnomon is in place but all the markings on the dial have been effaced. No hour lines or numbers are visible, not even vestiges.
The old monastery is now operated as a gite, offering accomodation, meals, and spiritual renewal. (Gites, Retraites, Haltes spirituelle).
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
