I happened upon this festival while in the area on Friday and thought it was so cool that I came back Saturday with the Family.
When I was there on Friday, they were still setting up.

Welcome to the 13th Annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival
Farmington, Utah
The Utah winter produced enough snow for what looks to be a very wet spring. As the mountain snow melts, the water trickles into streams, swells rivers, and eventually enters Great Salt Lake. The millions of birds that either call Great Salt Lake home or migrate through use the habitats this water sustains for food and shelter. Every year is a bit different, colder, warmer, wetter, drier, fresher, saltier, earlier or later. Despite the variability, the reliability of the food and protection in these water associated habitats is what keeps the birds coming back.

Great Salt Lake Bird Festival offers you many field trip opportunities to visit Great Salt Lake and see these large numbers of birds. You can choose to bird by horseback, canoe, kayak, boat, bicycle, bus, or van. Each field trip is carefully planned to get you to great birding spots. Guided field trips also included many birding areas in northern Utah near the Wyoming and Idaho borders. If you haven’t visited Utah before, now is a good time to come.

This is the 13th annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival. The Festival also includes a Friday, the 13th. To have fun with this coincidence we have added a workshop on BATS. We will also have opportunities for you to see local bat habitat. This is a perfect way to enjoy Friday, the 13th.

Each year the Festival spotlights a different bird and we feature it on schedule and t-shirts. This year it is the Western Tanager. Our friend Ella Sorensen has written a lovely piece about the Western Tanager (found in this booklet) and Dr. Jim Parrish will give a workshop about it on Saturday. The artwork of the Western Tanager was provided by Sarah Mueller from Logan Utah who won our student art contest last year (see 2012 bird art contest at the festival!). Last year several Western Tanager were seen in my backyard trees. I called my little granddaughter Ashley to look at them. She said, “Oh, Grandma, there is a rainbow in our backyard”. Many Festival field trips go to areas where you should see this ‘rainbow’.

We hope you enjoy the 13th annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival.
