Kamehameha the Great (ca. 1758 - 1819) is the most famous Hawaiian hero. He unified the Hawaiian Islands, established the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810, and maintained peace and traditional values under the pressure from Western influences.
This statue is cast in bronze and decorated in gold. It is the creation of the American artist Thomas R. Gould and is located in front of Ali'Iolani Hale - "House of the heavenly King" - the former Royal Palace. It was dedicated in 1893 as part of King Kalakaua's coronation ceremony.
