On 18 June 1972, British European Airways Flight BE548, a Trident 1C airliner, a commercial passenger flight from London Heathrow Airport to Brussels crashed at 16:11 (GMT), less than three minutes after taking off. The aircraft crashed near the town of Staines, killing all 118 persons on board. The accident became known as the Staines disaster, and was the worst air disaster in Britain until the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988.
On 18 June 2004 two memorials in Staines were dedicated to those who died in the accident. The first is a stained glass window in St Mary's church, Church Street, Staines. The second (and where these coords will take you) is a slightly more accessible area of reflection with seating on the Moormede estate, close to where the accident occurred.
Parking is advised here N 51° 26.291 W 000° 30.698
It is a very peaceful spot and contains a memorial plaque and seating area (semi-circular with two benches).
