The "Story of the Mahajanaka" is a Thai Buddhist account of the life of King Mahajanaka, the ruler of the kingdom of Mithila. The writings are replete with Buddhist imagery and ethical teachings, revealed as the king confronts and then overcomes the various problems with which he is assailed. The King of Thailand, Rama IX, produced a modern version of this account, with an English translation.
In commemoration of a visit of the King to the island of Samui, which is located in southern Thailand, a sculpted stone interpretation of this book stands adjacent to the main pier of the island. The book rests on a large dais, and is visible both from the land and the sea. There is Thai text on the plinth.
