The Srivijaya empire once, a millennium ago, stretched from the southern Malaysian peninsular, across Sumatra and Java. Now, it is long gone and near forgotten, with mere fragments of its past glories scattered across its once proud lands. One of these shards of empire is a chedi near the town of Chaiya, in the north of the southern Thai province of Surat Thani. Chaiya was an important city in the empire, managing as it did the trade across the peninsular—the 'Thai Silk Route', the southern silk route between Europe, the Middle East and China.
The ancient Chedi is located within the grounds of Wat Phra Borommathat. The Wat itself is an attractive, but standard Thai Buddhist wat, thus I have decided to make the Chedi the waymark, not the Wat. The Chedi is highly revered by the inhabitants of the province. An image of the Chedi is the provincial symbol. The Chedi is enclosed within a cloister. Entry is free, but a donation is customary, and the removal of one's shoes before entry is mandatory.
