86th Indiana Regiment Monument - Chickamauga National Battlefield - Relief Art Sculptures on Waymarking.com

The monument is a rough hewn stone approximately 9 feet tall. The top is rounded. The name of the unit, “86th Indiana” is engraved in the stone. A bronzed plaque shows a battle scene in relief. In the foreground a crew is reloading a cannon. I line of infantry receded in to the background; the units pennant can be seen. An officer stands behind the infantry, he holds his sword in the right hand, the arm is outstretched and he points toward the enemy, his left hand is next to the hilt of the scabbard. Most of the infantry is firing a volley toward the enemy while some appear to have been hit and others lie on the ground. In the distance, a mass of infantry is moving toward the right flank of the 86th Indiana. The date Saturday 4 PM Sept 19, 1863 is at the bottom of the plaque. A plaque on the rear of the monument describes the actions of the 86th during the battle of Chickamauga.

The state seal of Indiana, in bronze, is on the front and rear of the monument.

The plaque on the rear of the monument reads:

Indianas Tribute to her
Eighty-Sixth Regiment Infantry
George F. Dick, Colonel
Second Brigade (Dick)
Third Division (Vancleve)
Twenty-First Corps (Crittenden).

Friday, p.m., September the team, 1863, this regiment with its brigade was ordered from Crawfish Springs to support Woods Division, then engaged near Lee and Gordon's Mill.

Saturday, September 19, with its brigade met and repulsed the severe charge of Stewart's Division East of Lafayette Road, after which it was ordered to the position where this monument stands and aided in successfully resisting the fierce assaults of the enemy from 4 until 4:30 P. M. when it was compelled to retire by reason of a heavy flank movement of the enemy on the right.

Sunday morning, September 20, in line west of Lafayette Road near Kelly Field, severely engaged for a short time with Breckenridge's troops and upon retiring took position on the next ridge beyond the Snodgrass house, about 5 PM marched to McFarland’s Gap.
