Downtown Riverhead, Long Island, is the location for Atlantis Marine World. It sits on 3.2 acres along the scenic Peconic River.
Construction for this exceedingly well done aquarium began in 1999. The aquarium opened on June 15, 2000. Despite its rather remote location at the east end of Long Island, more than one million people have visited Atlantis Marine World, making it one of Long Island’s most popular year-round attractions.
Atlantis Marine World contains the western hemisphere’s largest all-living Coral Reef display. It uses more than one million gallons of water which is delivered by tanker truck from nearby Shinnecock Bay.
Exhibits and activities include marine mammals, penguin encounter, interactive stingray pool, interactive salt marsh, coral reef fish, shark dive, and children's programs.
