Around 1900 George C. Boldt, millionaire owner of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build a full size Rhineland castle in Alexandria Bay to display his love for his wife, Louise. In 1904 Louise suddenly died. All work on the castle ceased and Boldt never again visited the island. The island was abandoned until it was acquired by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority in 1977. Since then, several million dollars have been spent to rehabilitate, restore and improve the Heart Island structures.
The powerhouse is located on the eastern end of Heart Island. It designed to look like a medieval tower but was meant to house coal fired steam generators to provide electricity to the island. An arched stone bridge connects the powerhouse to the island. This utilitarian building is probably the most impressive powerhouse in the world.
