Thanks to a £15 million grant from the Arts Council Lottery Fund the IMAX cinema was opened in 1999. The 477 seat cinema has Britain’s largest cinema screen, at over 20 metres high and 26 metres wide. The cinema has a state of the art sound and projection system and screens a variety of films, in both normal format and 3-D. The building itself also has some architectural significance, and was designed by Bryan Avery. The outside wall also features a mural by the British artist Howard Hodgkin.
