Tower Square was originally opened as Baystate West Mall in 1970. It was an attempt to revive an urban downtown. It contains 200,000 sq. ft. of retail space on two levels and is connected to a large Marriott Hotel. What began as a major addition to an existing downtown shopping area had to reinvent itself when two anchor department stores closed their doors in the 1990's. It now provides boutique shops, convenience stores, and services primarily to local residents, downtown office workers, hotel guests and Springfield tourists.
