This anchor was discovered in 2003 during groundwork prior to the construction of University Bridge. It had an unusual purpose; it was not used to anchor ships at sea.
In the olden days when sailing barges were to be careened, a counterstay was needed on land. In order to obtain a fixed, safe attachment, an anchor was buried at the edge of the quay. After that, work with repair and maintenance of the underside of the hull of the sailing barge could commence.
The method was predecessor of modern dry docks. The anchor is probably from the end of the 19th century.
