The park is on land granted to Samuel McFarland by the Republic of Texas. Known for its grove of Pecan Trees, the park commemorates the pioneers of the werea. Dr. James Webb Throckmorton (1825-1894) is one of the pioneers. He served as a Confederate brigadier general during the Civil War. He was later Governor of Texas (1866 -1867)
