Thomas Jefferson designed more buildings than Monticello. When Monticello became too crowded or the British were pursuing him, he retreated to this 4000+ acre Poplar Forest plantation. The octagonal brick house at Poplar Forest was built in 1806 with features of his own liking (and some common with Monticello): skylight, alcove bed, large windows, terrace deck (which could collect rainwater).
Poplar Forest is open to the public seven days a week, March 15 through December 15 (closed Thanksgiving Day) between 10AM to 4PM. Admission for the house tour is $14 for adults. The non-profit website with further visit information is given below as a link.
