The Peabody City Building was built circa 1886.  The citizens voted in September 1886 to authorize a $6,000 bond issue for a city building.  By the end of that month Emporia architect C.W. Squires and building R.A. Gibbs and Son had been awarded contracts to build the stone building to house city hall, jail and fire department.  The two-story building was constructed of local limestone.

The building continues to house the city offices, the fire department moved from the building in 1971.  The building is well maintained and is in good condition.
