These two old gas pumps recall days when “service stations” came with service. They stand in front of “Johnny’s Reborn 1932 English Cottage Filling Station.” They are vintage Phillips 66 pumps with a current “special sale” promotion, 7 gallons for a dollar—tomorrow.
The family truck and auto salvage business started in 1939 when John C. Vander Haag, Sr. started the “South Side Junkyard. The second generation of Vander Haags took over in 1955, and five years later John Jr. expanded the business to include truck parts and repair. The 50,000 square foot Vander Haag Museum in Sanborn is filled with old time filling station memorabilia, restored trucks and cars.
The Vander Haag Museum, filling station and pumps are located at the junction of U.S. 18 and U.S. 59 in Sanborn, Iowa. It is open to visitors by appointment by calling 712-729-3606.
