This memorial pays tribute to the 451 men from Dodge County who served in the Civil War. The original idea for a Civil War monument was suggested in 1866 by Dodge County resident Colonel Alonzo Edgerton, who commanded the 67th U.S. Colored Infantry during the Civil War.

The state of Minnesota was the first state to offer support of the Union when the civil war started. This regiment was known as the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry (V. I.) Four men from Dodge County were part of this regiment.
