The site was originally occupied by the Springfield Civic Center, which opened in 1972. It soon proved to be too small to attract many major acts. So, it was completely renovated, expanded, renamed the MassMutual Center and reopened in 2005.

The Springfield Armor of the National Basketball Association D-League and - NBA Affiliate of the New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers.
The Complex offers a ballroom, meeting rooms, a 40,000 square feet of exhibit space, plus a newly renovated 8,000-seat sports arena for hockey and basketball.
