The traditional cross stands in a medieval socket base and has a stepped plinth added from the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar. The cross has been repositioned three times but has been on its present site since 1898 when Viscount Melville added the steps and shaft.
The inscription on the memorial is so worn that they are illegible. Details from the Listed Buildings website visit link have the inscription detailed as: "The preaching of the Cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God".
