Lying ~600kms south of Bangkok, on the eastern side of the long Thai peninsular is the town and province of Surat Thani (abbreviated, as you might expect, as 'Surat'). The town is surrounded by tourist attractions, leaving little cause for tourists to visit the, some might say, not overly exciting town itself.

The station is ~5kms south west of the town centre. It is larger than most provincial stations with bus 30 bays, however, it follows the standard model, with a central, rectangular open waiting area, with bus bays around, ticket counters at one end, and food and drink at the other. In an odd departure, there are virtually no English language signs in the station. Entirely functional in design, it is a busy station, travellers exit here to take transport to the resort island of Koh Samui, or to several national parks in the region.

There is an 'informal' bus station in the town itself. I have not been able to ascertain precisely the division of responsibilities between the two stations. This larger deals with travel to and from Bangkok and more distant destinations, plus intra-provincial traffic. The town bus station the neighbouring provinces, and intra-provincial traffic, with some overlap. I think. Clear?

At the station are the usual bevy of enterprising tuk tuk and 'motorbike driver' ready to whisk you away.

* advisory: The tuk tuk and motor bike taxi guys at this bus station are the most 'entrepreneurial' I have met in Thailand. Expect to pay 100 baht for a tuk tuk into the city from here, half that for a motorbike, add 50 baht if at night. These are generous prices, more than a local would expect to pay. Not 500 baht. ($1 = ~30 baht). Be prepared to haggle.

There is a bus service between the town train station, which lies further from the city, to Surat town. This bus service stops at the bus station. You can take this into the city. This is the 'red' bus, which does have an English language 'train station to Surat' sign.
