Ratchaburi is a small town and capital of the province of the same name ~80kms to the west of Bangkok. The town has a museum near the town centre. As with most Thai museums this is administered both locally and as part of the Fine Arts Department of Thailand network of museums.
I was impressed with the quality of the museum. It describes the history of the region and its cultural development from pre-historic times to the present. This is done in a clear, informative and interesting manner. There is a range of diorama, and of local historical artefacts. I would have liked to have seen more photographs and discussion of the city and province in the 20th century, but this seems to be something Thai museums shy away from. The displays have dual Thai and English text.
In design the museum is a square building surrounding a courtyard. The building was constructed in 1922 as the town hall. In 1988 it established as a museum. Entry cost shows the usual Thai/non-Thai ratio. For a Thai 20 baht, for a foreigner 100 baht (~$3.50). No photography allowed, an annoying trend catching on in Thailand. The waymark was made at the main entrance to the museum.
The museum is certainly worth a visit if you happen to find yourself in the area.
