This bridge is named after Thomas B. Manuel.Credit for the successful building of the Turnpike also goes to Thomas B. Manuel. Known as the “Father of the Turnpike,” Manuel was a former rancher turned Fort Lauderdale county commissioner, and later, chairman of the Florida State Turnpike Authority from January 1955 to January 1961. The old bridge was originally built in 1957, spanned the Caloosahatchee Waterway, was removed. The present span opened for traffic in 2003.
