The National Iwo Jima Memorial straddles border between Newington CT and New Britain CT. This moving memorial tells the story of the famous WWII battle for control of tiny Iwo Jima island.
It contains a replica of the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, VA, based on an Associated Press photograph by Joseph Rosenthal, depicting the raising of the American Flag over Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima by five Marines and a Navy hospital corpsman.
The sculpture, by Joseph Petrovics, is surrounded by granite plaques, each of which tells a piece of the story. An eternal flame burns on a ten foot pedestal to the north of the statue.
