I stumbled across this benchmark during a great winter snowshoe along trail #36 (The Canada Trail) in Gatineau Park. The benchmark was placed by the National Capital Commission (NCC), who are the custodians of this massive 361 square kilometer park to the Northwest of downtown Ottawa, only minutes away by car. At this time, the NCC does not have a publicly searchable database of their benchmarks, so I cannot obtain any further information on what the purpose of its placement is here.
The brass disc is secured with concrete to the surface of a large rock, overlooking the lake. The view of the lake from this point is beautiful in all seasons. An old boathouse can be seen to the North, where the trail continues further up into the park.
To access the area, you can park at the O’Brien lot (P11) here: N45 31.620 W75 51.924. You can also reach the area by canoe or kayak (no motor boats allowed). You can launch your favourite watercraft at the Meech lot (P12 ) close to here: N45 32.228 W75 53.984. The first portion of this trails is busy with hikers in the warmer month, as well as skiers and snowshoers in the winter. The walk in is a long one, but the scenery makes it well worth the trip.
