Hawtense Conrad was a local philanthropist and museum founder in DeLand, Florida. She and her husband, Robert Conrad, donated land and contributed money to build the original Conrad Park. The Conrads also helped establish the Naval Air Museum at the DeLand Airport. The couple purchased and donated the historic DeLand House, former home of John B. Stetson, the namesake of Stetson University in DeLand, to the West Volusia Historical Society. The House was named the Henry A. DeLand House Museum and became the Society's headquarters. Five years after her husband's death, Mrs. Conrad gave $90,000 to the historical society to build the Robert Conrad Educational Research Building behind the DeLand House. She also provided funds to replace the Burgess Building, a black hospital that once stood behind the old DeLand Memorial Hospital on Stone Street. The new building, on which her blue plaque is displayed, is now the Hawtense Conrad Elephant Fantasyland, which is the home of Hawtense's extensive elephant figurine and curio collection.
