The small town of Nakhon Nayok lies 80kms or so east of the cosmopolitan metropolis that is Bangkok, however, this town is light years distant in sociological terms. While Bangkok has millions this town has a population of 30,000 or so, while the province has a quarter of a million. It is a town and province of hard working, industrious farmers and light industry. A small amount of aquatic tourism (waterfalls and boat rides) rounds out the workforce. A small river, of the same name, meanders through the town centre. A pleasant spot for peace and quiet, but little spoken English is to be found, and expect the children to stare at you and say 'farang!'—with a smile. The town has all the basic amenities, but expect to travel to Bangkok to buy that big screen plasma.

The region is rich and fertile, thus it is no surprise that there has been a town here stretching back at least five centuries, most likely far longer. There is archaeological evidence of centuries old town walls within the existing city limits.

The town offices are located close to the town centre, near the town fountain. Not overly large, but big enough for a town of this size. I usually visit these small towns on weekends, which, unfortunately means that the government offices are closed, which in turn leaves no civil servant to interrogate. Thus little information.
